Watching The Turtles Hatch

The hatching season for turtles in Barbados runs from mid-July through to mid-October. It’s amazing to think that the female hawksbills return to the same beach that they were born on to make their nest, and a single nest can produce up to 160 eggs.

The hatchlings are much smaller than you would expect and usually emerge at night, roughly between 6 pm and 6 am, where they then use the moonlight to guide them into the sea. Barbados is home to both Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles, which are protected species.
